A guide for residents of the Netherlands

Private treatment abroad.
Start with the right questions.

Compare clinical care, privacy, language and continuing care before making the destination your decision.

This is a sample comparison, not a clinical ranking. Published provider information was checked on 21 September 2026; individual suitability and current availability must be confirmed.

Separate the care from the setting.

Ask for a clear account of the proposed treatment, the clinicians involved and the level of support outside appointments. A private residence, a small shared setting and an addiction treatment hospital are different models, not interchangeable packages.

Four practical questions

  • Where will I actually stay, and who will be responsible for clinical care?
  • Which assigned clinicians can work in my preferred language?
  • What does the complete written quote include and exclude?
  • Who will coordinate care after I return to the Netherlands?

Check payment and insurance before committing.

Do not assume that a Dutch policy covers a private overseas programme in full. Ask your insurer about eligibility, referrals and any prior authorization before admission. Zorginstituut Nederland ↗.

Before you travel

Does being fluent in English mean I should choose English-language therapy?

Not necessarily. Consider your comfort discussing difficult experiences and confirm your preference with the assigned clinician.

Can I book before my clinical assessment?

Ask the provider to explain its admission criteria and assessment process before you make non-refundable commitments.

What should be arranged for returning home?

Ask for a named coordinator, an agreed handover with your existing clinicians, follow-up arrangements, medication responsibilities and an escalation plan.
